Devising Immersive theatre
“Artists who harness more than our eyes and ears encourage us to wake up, to be alert to the world around us, and to interact actively with the objects and creatures around us. It is an invitation to live, to feel, and to be part of a larger community” (Di Benedetto in Machon 2013: 85)
This is what inspires us to push boundaries and create new pieces of theatre, that will engage audiences in unique ways.
The workshop is to induct participants into a new way of theatre making - The immersive way. How can we craft personal audience experiences by getting them to participate in your work without being passive spectators? This form of theatre seeks to engage multiple audience senses to immerse them into a unique theatrical experience.
The workshop focuses on enabling participants to create original work that stems from their own expression, supported by gesture, movement, text and voice.
Day 1: Workshop participants will explore and experiment with the concept of space and how space can be a starting point to create immersive work. Concepts of time, duration and repetition will be explored along with expressive gesture.
Day 2: Potential relationships with audience members in immersive theatre scenario. What does it mean to engage multiple audience senses in a theatrical environment? How can we create compelling ways of story telling that asks the audience to be more than a passive spectator ?
Workshop outcome: Participants will be inspired to explore this new way of theatre making and the introductory workshop will be a starting point towards the creation of a full length devised performance on the concept of FREEDOM in the 21st century, to be premiered in Jagriti theatre in August 2015
